TFS Sicko: My Own Story

If you followed SXMX on line in the past 10 years, you probably noticed I had a bit of a weight problem. I was averaging about 280 lb and never a big eater or reckless with diet, and usually very active, but you can't convince too many people when all they see is 4X shirts-so they jump to conclusions and blame it all on you.

I never accepted all that weight because I knew it shouldn't have been there. I went to countless drs, universities, clinics, and read books and web sites, and never could find the reason. I would look in the mirror and call the mirror a liar, but still had no answer or way out. I did know something was very wrong with blood chemistry, based on data as early as 1994, but no one could answer my questions all these years. It got so ridiculus I actually started to google for used blood lab equipment so I could have samples drawn and become my own dr and figure it out myself.

In May 2007, I was at a famous university medical center seeing an endocrinologist. I quit taking the standard medicine for thyroid patients, and she wanted me back on it. I said I want a better answer. Six years of this crap is making me worse, and there HAS to be some other answer, and I want to know what it is. There are clues no one is paying attention too. She said no, get back on it. Instead I was whining on a web site about it, and lucky for me, a patient from a different kind of doctor saw it and sent a reference. I went there, finally got an answer, and a year later, the weight and problems are gone.

I happened so fast, it's like being in a movie where someone wakes up in a different body, and you see the world differently, and it sees you differently. It's pretty amazing.

So What Was it?

I had a complicated thyroid case that was aggravated by adrenal problems. Standard practice fails in such cases. I don't know if I should feel happy it got solved, or stupid that it took so long!

So What Did You Do?

Briefly, the dr that solved this said that years of hormone problems and bad thyroid medicine had created a mess to clean up. I've been on the South Beach Diet, phase 1, since August 2007, and I take about 30 pills a day, designed to clean the mess up.

I stopped using the most common thyroid medicine, Synthroid, because it was the cause of some of the problems. I also take hormones that replace what the adrenals lost, and that gets checked every few months - always will.

So

-Short term, strict diet, get the junk out.
-Long term - Keep up with non working thyroid and adrenals with medicine, and I'm good.

How Fast Did the Weight Go?

I remember by which race it was - In May (High Point) I was 315 and that was a Synthroid problem-I stopped taking it and was not going to listen to any more drs telling me to use it. At the new national at Freestone I as 285 when I started the new dr. I was 265 at the US Open, 245 at Bercy, 225 at Christmas and 200 at Minneapolis. It was pretty easy.

OK, So Where is the Info I Can Use Too?

1) If you are a thyroid case too and not happy with the medicine, it might be Reverse T3, which a lot of drs don't seem to know about. Read more about it here.

2) This is the good news - a lot of people struggling with weight could use a trip to a good hormone dr for a better understanding of what to do about it. Screw the off-the shelf diet programs, "get yer shit checked" and start with the right knowledge. This was the part the thyroid drs I was seeing avoided for some reason. Some told me to stay away from hormone drs, and that's where I ended up being at last cured. Strange. The people that you pay to help you tell you exactly the wrong thing for some reason.

This is hindsight for me of course, but I lived through so many syndromes and problems piled on each other, I understand what it's like to have 50-100 lb that won't budge, you try everything, it doesn't work and everyone blames you. For many of us, it's not a case of less food equals less weight. Athletes know this, actors know this, and the technology is spreading at places like I ended up for people with weight and other problems they don't understand. Read all about it here. Shameless plug-I see Dr Wightman.

Does this iphone pic make me look fat?
